Everton 3-3 Liverpool- Sturridge saves Reds

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge scored an 88th minute equalizer to deny Everton's Roberto Martinez a win in his first Mersyside derby in a exhilarating game. The match was off to a great start from a Liverpool perspective as midfield maestro Philippe Coutinho passed the ball past James McCarthy into the net after a Sturridge flick on. A few minutes after, Belgian winger Kevin Mirallas leveled as he pounced Leighton Baines' curling corner which Martin Skrtel could not clear. A brilliantly executed free-kick from Luis Suarez swerved past the Everton wall and into the bottom corner which silenced Goodison Park for the second time. On-form striker Romelu Lukaku restored clarity for Everton as the Belgian tucked in good play from Everton. Eighty-two minutes gone, Lukaku rose well after Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu did well out wide and did even better with a cross. Then, after a few passes, Newcastle took the lead via Yohan Cabaye, who rifled a curling shot past Mignolet and into the back of the net from 30 yards. UCL round-up

Last night was a good a night for Bayern Munich, Olympiakos, Real Madrid, PSG, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow as they picked up three points but Manchester City, Real Sociedad, Copenhagen, Anderlecht, Victoria Plzen and Benfica suffered a loss.

A 17:00 (GMT) kick-off between Russian giants CSKA Moscow and Czech Republic outfit Victoria Plzen was heavily contested but the home side (CSKA) edged the game 3-2. Plzen struck first, Rajatoral's 4th minute goal put the minnows ahead. But, Zoran Tosic's deflected shot equalized and soon Keisuke Honda's composed out side of the boot finish gave the Russians the lead. Plzen then did score, but it was in the wrong goal. They took too long to fightback, Bakos scored to make it 3-2 in injury time.

Anderlecht were given a beating at home by Greek Super League champions Olympiakos thanks to a hat-trick from on-form striker Kostas Mitroglou. The 25 year-old became the first Greek in the Champions League history to net three goals in a game. His last goal was one of the best of the night as he took it past a defender and rifled a 22 yard shot into the top the corner of the Anderlecht keepers net.

Despite conceding with 15 minutes to go, Manchester United took a point from Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. Welbeck opened the scoring after Rakyckyj's clearance from a Fellani cross was met and struck well by the England international striker. Young Brazilian starlet Taison then smashed the ball into the roof of the net at the 76th minute when Man United could not clear.

A double from Real Madrid pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria crushed Danish minnows FC Copenhagen 4-0. Ronaldo scored first with a header then he doubled the lead for the Spanish giants with another header this time from the six yard box as Di Maria did a rabona to cross for the 6ft 2in striker to get his second of the game. Di Maria then got on the scoresheet, the Argentine curled the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net. Identical to his first, Di Maria slotted the ball into the net from outside of the box to finish off a stunning display from Real Madrid.

Paris Saint Germain grabbed their second win in the Champions League this season against Benfica thanks to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic double. A controversial opening goal from Ibrahimovic, which looked offside, gave the French side the lead and 18 year-old Marquinhos doubled the score. The Swede, Ibrahimovic, got his brace after he jumped and headed the ball into the net from a Thiago Motta corner to give PSG all three points.

Manchester City suffered an embarrassing 3-1 defeat to reigning Champions League winners Bayern Munich at home. Awful goalkeeping from Joe Hart let in Bayern winger Franck Ribery's rocket of a shot from outside of the box. A long ball was met by Thomas Muller in the second half ; he took it round Hart and finished to double their lead. Robben hit the third and a late Alvaro Negredo strike gave City a consolation goal. Then, Jerome Boateng was given a straight red card for taking down Yaya Toure on the edge of the box when the Ivorian was about to score.

Roberto Mancini made a great start as the new Galatasary manager by salvaging a point at Juventus thanks to a 88th minute Umar Bulut equalizer. A horrible defensive error from Juventus at the 36th minute gave Didier Drogba a great chance to score and the striker- cool as ever- slotted past Buffon with ease. Juve equalized after Vidal, who won it, scored the penalty. Then, Fabio Quagliarella headed the ball into the roof of the net powerfully from a Pirlo cross. But, the Italian's celebrations were cut short as Umar Bulut's composed finish gave Mancini's side a point.

Bayer Leverkusen won 2-1 thanks to a brilliant curling free-kick from Jens Hegeler against Spanish side Real Sociedad. On the stroke of half-time, veteran captain Simon Rofles headed in a delightful cross to give the home side the lead but then, Sociedad won a penalty. Former-Arsenal man Carlos Vela took it but the keeper saved the day with a good jump to the left but the Mexican was alert and tapped in the rebound. Two minutes into injury time, Hegeler curled a free-kick to perfection right into the top corner of the net.

1st September 2013:

Arsenal 1-0 Spurs: Giroud separates sides

In a feisty north-London derby, Arsenal were the winners thanks to Olivier Giroud's first half strike while Tottenham lost for the first time this season.

Arsenal tested Spurs early on, Santi Cazorla's 3rd minute free kick was palmed out for a corner by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Arsene Wenger's side continuously created chances and finally they scored. Tomas Rosicky started it as he played it out right to Theo Walcott who found Giroud in the middle and his deft touch ended up in the bottom corner.

Shortly after the goal, Townsend created Tottenham's first real chance, the winger's 25 yard drive was pushed away by Wojciech Sczesney.

Walcott and Giroud's partnership in the game was quality, the two having lots of great chances.

But, Andre Villas-Boas' team did not accept defeat, Pauliniho's deflected shot was heading straight for the bottom corner if it was not for Szcesney, who somehow managed to deny the Brazilian.

It was end to end stuff from then on, Walcott's curling effort was saved by Lloris and Nacho Monreal just couldn't get the ball out of his feet for the rebound.
Giroud touches the ball past the stranded Lloris to score.

Real M 3-1 Bilbao: Isco double inspires win

Summer signing Isco was twice on target as Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in the 11:00 kick-off game at the Bernebau.

Arsenal target Karim Benzema chipped a weighted ball into the box for Isco to control and slot past Bilbao's goalkeeper Iago Herreirin.

Whipping a ball into the box, Angel Di Maria found Cristiano Ronaldo, and the unmarked Portuguese forward headed it in the net to double Carlo Ancelloti's lead.

Madrid pressed and pressed and it soon payed off as Benzema's ball to Isco on the edge of the box was scored by the £23m signing thanks to a big deflection off a Athletic player.

Bursting down the flank, Andoni Iraola crossed for Ibai Gomez to smash into the top corner to give Bilbao a consolation goal at the 79th minute.

Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde has denied that the reason of leaving star midfielder Andre Herrera out of the starting xl is anything to do with Manchester United's rejected £25m bid.
